Amazon S3 Downtime Visualized

Filed under: General — geoff @ 1:50 am

Amazon Web Services made big news yesterday with their six or so hours of mid-day downtime. I didn’t even notice until I logged in to check my MochiBot stats. I use Amazon S3 for Slideroll, both as a storage and hosting service. It’s a great service that’s allowed the site to continue growing without having to constantly worry about upgrading to add storage space and hosting capacity.

NPR Launches Open API, offers Widgets

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the privilege of working with Daniel Jacobson of NPR.org in developing a Flash widget that utilizes their newly-released API. The result of these efforts is the Reverbiage World Widget that plots stories on a 3d globe. The widget is written in ActionScript 3.0 using my own 3d engine currently in development.

Euclidean Space Dot Com, Great 3d Math Resource

Filed under: General — geoff @ 11:33 am

I’ve been working away at building my own 3d engine, and it seems that every time I run into a math problem, euclideanspace.com always comes to the rescue. It has tons of information on dealing with those complicated 3d math problems. Not only does it cover the math, it explains the theory in a concise manner as well. I found a good deal of information on dealing with 3d rotations and quaternions, which had me stumped for quite a while.

Moving to the Bay Area!

Filed under: General — geoff @ 12:34 am

I’m all packed and heading out this week to San Francisco. I’ve lived in Northern Virginia most of my life, so this is a big change. I’ll be working for Mochi Media downtown, doing a lot of cool Flash stuff. I’m really excited – there’s a lot of energy in this company. I’m looking forward to getting more involved in the Flash gaming scene. If you live in the area, drop me a line!

iPhone, Flash, and Multi-touch

Steve Jobs recently announced at the WWDC that the iPhone will be able to allow developers to develop iPhone apps using the Safari browser as a platform (video). “We have been trying to come up with a solution to expand the capabilities of iPhone by letting developers write great apps for it and yet keep the iPhone reliable and secure, and we’ve come up with a very sweet solution.” There’s no SDK, you use web technologies and deliver your apps via the web.
