iPhone, Flash, and Multi-touch

Steve Jobs recently announced at the WWDC that the iPhone will be able to allow developers to develop iPhone apps using the Safari browser as a platform (video). “We have been trying to come up with a solution to expand the capabilities of iPhone by letting developers write great apps for it and yet keep the iPhone reliable and secure, and we’ve come up with a very sweet solution.” There’s no SDK, you use web technologies and deliver your apps via the web.

Webdesignfromscratch has an interesting post that dissects the graphical style of current - how you say - “Web 2.0″ style in web design. In short, big text, white space, gradients, and cute icons. So - attention all you web designers because this is really important - we should all make our web sites look like this.

IE7 Compatibility, ACT now!

IE7 is coming soon, and in order to prepare us, Microsoft is broadcasting e-mail notices to inform us regarding the Best Practices for “minimizing disruption” to our application environments.  I’m so glad to see Microsoft being proactive about ensuring that everyone who codes for the web will have time to upgrade the internet to be Vista-ready.  For those of you still coding for outdated browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Opera, here’s a link to their readiness toolkit.  Good luck, starfighter!

Progress Bars, People, and Machines

So sitting here watching the progress bar of my life creep along, I started thinking about all the progress bars I’ve seen.   The first progress bar I got to know well was the 3d Studio MAX rendering progress bar.  It suffered from the same usability malady that most progress bars do.  If you think about the question that the progress bar anwsers, it should be “When are ya gonna be done?”

Net Neutrality threatened, COPE Act Passes House

Well, it looks like the End Times are nigh, at least for the internet. The COPE Act, which give big companies like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast the ability to throttle bandwidth for sites who don’t pay their extortion fees. So, the internet, with its wonderful array of diversity, expressed by creatives of all classes, could be completely flattened, turned into a barren landscape with only the Wal-marts of the web surviving.
