Amazon S3 Downtime Visualized
Amazon Web Services made big news yesterday with their six or so hours of mid-day downtime. I didn’t even notice until I logged in to check my MochiBot stats. I use Amazon S3 for Slideroll, both as a storage and hosting service. It’s a great service that’s allowed the site to continue growing without having to constantly worry about upgrading to add storage space and hosting capacity.

No system is perfect, even an uber-redundant worldwide cloud-computing network. So, I made sure that Slideroll could weather any downtime. The graph above demonstrates my main site taking over the load as Amazon S3 putters out, then returns control to Amazon when it comes back online. I’m glad I didn’t notice the downtime – it means it worked as designed. Whew.
