Picklish Photo & Video Galleries, now for OS X
I’m pleased to announce the latest update to Picklish is now completely cross-platform. Now you can create slick Flash photo and video galleries on your PC and your Mac! There’s no easier way to publish your photos and video to the net.
It was a big challenge making my first cross-platform application. Using MDM Zinc made it possible. Zinc is a great development system, however their OS X version doesn’t have nearly the number of features that the PC version does.
I use ffmpeg to encode video in FLV format. And, since Picklish is free, I can’t afford to include MP3 encoding functionality in the app itself—due to the fact I would need to pay royalties to the creators of the MP3 codec. I use Windows Media Player to encode the audio into MP3 format on the PC. For OS X, I use iTunes to encode the audio stream to MP3. Since Zinc supports AppleScript, I was able to tell iTunes to encode the audio stream.
So, please give it a try and let me know what you think!

Very nice little app. I would love the ability to customize the size of the images in the slideshow – they’re just a bit too small for my taste. Any way to add the ability to customize? 1024×768 would be nice!

UPDATE: I’ve had problems running this app on certain PPC (non-Intel) Macs. I’m working with MDM on the issue. – Geoff

Hi there, great little application! Is there anyway the color of the border around the pictures can be changed? I can change the background color easily, but I would love to be able to change the border from the default white color.
Thanks

I just downloaded Picklish to give it a spin, and while the concept is great, it’s been choking a bit on my PowerMac G5. Let’s say I add in a dozen photos, it will generate a gallery, but only the first 9 photos are in it – the last three slots are blank. The gallery seems to work otherwise, however. Meanwhile, back in Picklish I can’t do anything, even quit. I have to force quit.
I look forward to trying out the next version. Like Jim, I’d love to have the ability to set the image size. I’d also love to have a button that lets the user run a slideshow, perhaps with a chosen audio track. Adding hyperlinks to images that can take them to other places on my web site would also be nice.
Great job, looking forward to seeing more…

Picklish – what’s with the name? Nevermind.
Very nice work around for audio encoding… that’s brilliant!
I find the beta working quite well on OSX 10.4.8 which has been tested on PPC G5, G4 and an iMac G3. Keep up the excellent work. I can’t wait for the next revision to this special little wonder.
One quick question… can’t add a .FLV file already prepared – why is this? MP4 and MOV work… why not the Flash video?
This was tested with a Youtube .FLV and a file prep’d using VisualHub 1.20.
Many thanks – cool creative app.

I guess I never thought people would use FLV as an input. I guess I could add that file type as a pass through to be included in the gallery. Thanks for the suggestion! -g

Hi Geoff,
Great app, esp. for the MAC! I have a MacBook and would like to know two simple things. Is there a way to save my project? I don’t have any options for me on toolbar. Also, how do I delete a video that I no longer want. I tried double-clicking and deleting, that didn’t work.
Thanks,
Thais

I can’t get the Picklish app to open up again! Dunno. Well it was great the first time. Any suggestions?
Comment by Thais — 2/6/2007 @ 12:18 pm
Thais,
Yes, there are known problems with MDM Zinc, the wrapper software that allows Picklish to do all that funky system-level stuff. I’m working with the developers of that software to get them to fix Zinc so that I can fix Picklish.
Hopefully, there will be an update soon!

Wonderful application first class – seems to get stuck on output to folder on intel or ppc mac (10.4.8) only puts a few files into the folder and then gives up and has to be force quit – this seems to be dependant on having quite a few items 10 or so. Same batch of media works fine on windows version. Same is true for any mixture of video and different photo files.

Grr..
yes, this is a known problem with MDM Zinc OS X. I’ve been hounding the developers over there to fix these problems. I think that they don’t know much about UNIX and permissions – my theory being that the app is trying to read and write to places it may not necessarily have permission for. I hope to get an update soon.

hi, I would love to use your picklish application to use on my website but I can’t ….
because of the yellow border.
Can you explain me how to change it? in to grey, same color as the arrows?
Thanks,
Ymke
Comment by ymke — 2/21/2007 @ 5:40 am
The yellow border only appears when you select a photo. Is that what you mean? If so, there’s no way to change that currently. I’m working on a new version and I’ll consider adding the ability to change that color.

So can I add sound to the background with micromedia flash. I guess I can’t since I only have the xml files. Great application. So the mob video I put in looks great but the only way to get sounds is if you have itunes? that’s the only way?
Thanks again…
Comment by william — 2/28/2007 @ 4:43 pm
Yes, the only way I can legally convert the audio from your video into MP3 without paying exorbitant licensing fees is to use Windows Media Player on the PC, and iTunes on the Mac. If I didn’t, I would have to charge for the program.
By the way, iTunes comes with OS X, and WMP comes with Windows, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Awesome app! Thanks a ton! Please if possible implement option to be able to select the picture/flash_movie size (like 800×600, 1024×768, etc). Now it’s too small.

Like this little pg but would like to be able to resize images and the BORDER way to thick for my taste this also would be nice to adjust.
Keep up the goods work.
Comment by Yargh — 3/7/2007 @ 11:25 am
Great app, I’m into it. Two things that I’d need to use it on my site (AKA: My Two Cents):
1) I’m a photographer, so the washed out effect on mouse-over of the enlarged shot has got to be optional. I realize it goes away when you move your mouse, but I can’t count on folks to do that. From a UI standpoint, I understand the need for some kind of feedback to tell the user that the currently selected picture is a button. Might I suggest a toggling frame as an option?
2) It would be nice if it had a better way to handle really big galleries, rather than just infinitely shrinking the thumbs.
But jeez, nice work for 0.5b.

Nice work! I have a perfect application but it would require embedding the flash in a WordPress post template. I’ve been trying to do this with no luck and assume that the player must be invoked from the same directory. I am able to embed the player but it won’t load media. Is there a way and, if not, is this something you would consider for a future version? Excellent app!

UPDATE: A new version is available – 0.7b
This version fixes a lot of bugs and adds new features – has been rebranded as well. It’s now called Slideroll Gallery AV.

Nice little tool thanks. I’m adding my own flv videos to my gallery but is there any way I can
stipulate the playback height/width of the flv?
Is there a code that can control this in the .xml file ?
ie. vidwidth=”100 vidheight=”50″ added to

Great program. I love it. But i can’t seem to write captions like on you sample. How can i do that?
Comment by Tequila — 7/21/2008 @ 9:04 pm
Once you drag your photos onto Slideroll Gallery AV, click the blue “Arrange Photos” button, then you’ll see a prompt that reads “Double Click to rotate, add captions or audio.” So, double-click a photo and you’ll see an area at the bottom to type in a caption.

I may yet go with Wordpress (to be honest, I haven’t had a chance to take another look at the photoblog since I wrote my original post). However, I’m not too keen on the Flickr blogging tools. I prefer to simply link to the image manually and use my own blog’s style sheets to adjust or modify the appearance.

My only real problem with google analytics is that it doesn’t work very well with a lot of ASP pages, which a lot of clients use nowadays. It can also get kind of hairy when trying to get it to understand what a conversion is.
Instead of just any click, it needs to be one specific click haha.
