Use Google AdWords and AdSense? Exclude Yourself!

Filed under: General — geoff @ 12:49 am

I recently launched a new site which has Google AdSense ads on it. I also decided to use Google AdWords to promote the site. Recently while I was browsing my site, I noticed that one of the Google ads that appeared was my own! Now, I thought that must be a bug or a fluke. Nope. It’s normal, expected behavior of the system.

It seems silly that Google AdSense/AdWords would display ads for a site on the site itself. I mean, the user is already there, right? If I wanted to promote a particular aspect of my site, I would add some sort of promo using good old HTML - not use Google AdWords. So, for all of you who use Google AdWords for promoting your web site, and Google AdSense to make a little money to keep your site humming along, make sure you exclude yourself from your AdWords campaign. Seems odd, but that’s the way it is - for now at least.
