Use Google AdWords and AdSense? Exclude Yourself!

Filed under: General — geoff @ 12:49 am

I recently launched a new site which has Google AdSense ads on it. I also decided to use Google AdWords to promote the site. Recently while I was browsing my site, I noticed that one of the Google ads that appeared was my own! Now, I thought that must be a bug or a fluke. Nope. It’s normal, expected behavior of the system.

It seems silly that Google AdSense/AdWords would display ads for a site on the site itself. I mean, the user is already there, right? If I wanted to promote a particular aspect of my site, I would add some sort of promo using good old HTML - not use Google AdWords. So, for all of you who use Google AdWords for promoting your web site, and Google AdSense to make a little money to keep your site humming along, make sure you exclude yourself from your AdWords campaign. Seems odd, but that’s the way it is - for now at least.

  1. This might also seem obvious, but it should probably also be mentioned that if you operate multiple websites with AdSense ads on them, and you use AdWords to advertise even only one of these sites, you should be sure to exclude ALL of your sites that contain AdSense. After all, why advertise ON a site that you control the HTML for? It’s scary that the system doesn’t automatically do this for the site being advertised, but might be forgotten by those who use AdSense on multiple sites to exclude the whole lot.

  2. you can block your site at your adsence, means block your own xxxxx.com from appearing. if i am not mistaken it is located at blocking competitior’s advertisement option.

  3. With all their technology, you’d think Google would be able to filter a sites ads from displaying on the same sites adsense. Weird!
