Sploder, Flash Game Site Launches
I’m pleased to announce the realization of a dream I’ve had for a long time. It’s been over 2 years in the making, and it’s finally ready for you. I’d like to share with you the launch of a new Flash social gaming site. Sploder is currently host to the first of many games — a shoot-em-up space style arcade game. What makes Sploder unique is that it includes an interactive drag and drop level-editor that allows people to create their own game levels. You won’t find anything else out there quite like this.
Users who join can use the editor to change the shape of a polygonal playfield, and place game pieces within it. There’s a variety of pieces, including obstacles, powerups, enemies with AI, and Wingmen - AI controlled players who assist you.
Once you create your game, you can share it on Sploder, or embed it on your own blog or profile on your favorite social networking site:
The game runs on a highly optimized custom-made 2d physics engine. The system includes collision detection, basic artificial intelligence for non-player characters with line-of-sight detection, multiple weapon-types, camera tracking, and stereo environmental sound effects, all in 65k. Woo hoo!
The game is coded in Actionscript 2.0, and trying it out, you’ll see the framerate is pretty good even when there’s a bunch of NPCs, mortars, and missiles with contrails on screen. I can’t wait to see it perform in Actionscript 3.0.
There were many challenges during the creation of this game, and I had a blast building it. I’d like to thank my family for giving me the time to build this, and I’d like to thank Adobe for making this possible. I hope that this is the first of many games for Sploder, and I hope you enjoy playing them.
