Amazon S3 and Subdirectories

Filed under: General — geoff @ 10:10 am

I recently got a question from someone regarding how one can make subdirectories in Amazon S3. Amazon has only one level of directories, called “buckets”. There are no subdirectories, and you cannot put buckets in buckets. However, you can fake subdirectories by cleverly naming your resources.

For instance, say you have claimed a bucket named “mybucket”. Everything you place in the bucket would be accessible from the URL, http://s3.amazonaws.com/mybucket. Now, if you wanted to place an image resource deeply nested into a heirarchy, you couldn’t. But, if you name your resource path/to/my/resource.jpg, you can access it from http://s3.amazonaws.com/mybucket/path/to/my/resource.jpg. Voila!

How LEGO Bricks are Made

Businessweek has a story demonstrating how lego bricks are made.  Amazing.  Lord, if I die and come back as granulated acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, can I be LEGOs?

MochiAds, Adsense for Flash

Filed under: Flash, General — geoff @ 12:25 am

MochiMedia have just rolled out MochiAds, an ad network for Flash sites. This is a real boon for Flash developers, and something I have been waiting for for a long long time. As you probably know, Adsense ads do not work withing Flash, so for those of us who syndicate content via the Flash player, we’ve been SOL, until now. Check out the demo page to see how the ads work. The Wii is Wiidiculous!

Filed under: Diversions, General — geoff @ 6:08 pm

One of my coworkers brought their Wii in to work, and we played it at lunchtime. What a workout! The thing I love about the Wii is the combination of the physical interaction and the focus on gameplay. Since the Wii has such a unique controller, the games need to focus more on interaction and the quality of gameplay than on pretty effects. I personally like the fact that the games (that I played at least) aren’t gory or overly violent.

Picklish adds FTP Upload

Filed under: General — geoff @ 2:43 am

Picklish Photo Gallery FTPThe Picklish Photo Gallery Creator now has integrated FTP upload functionality. This makes it possible to publish Flash photo galleries to the web via simple drag and drop, without leaving the program. I hope to create a spin-off of this software and offer a free image uploader for automated image upload for people’s personal web sites.

There are significant advantages to using software like this to upload images, as opposed to just the browser. You get client-side image scaling, which reduces the file size significantly, thereby reducing your upload time by 10 to 20 times. You also have the convenience of drag and drop.
