Oops! Picklish Update Blundered
Sorry all, I did all this work to create a new release, told everyone about it, and somehow failed to upload the new release. I could have sworn I hit the ‘put’ button in Dreamweaver. Anyway, if you downloaded version 0.11a and wondered why video didn’t work, give 0.2a a shot. I have a feeling it has a bit better video support! Since I’m posting, I’d also like to link to some useful software for anyone who is creating desktop apps with Zinc, or any other language or framework. I owe these guys thanks…
- Inno Setup – a wonderful , free system for creating your own installers. It has a great wizard-based system for getting you started, and an integrated PASCAL scripting engine. Very customizable and powerful.
- Icon Sushi – a free program for creating 32-bit transparent icons. I use Fireworks for creating the icon artwork, and then Icon Sushi for exporting the icon package. Works better than some others in that you can create true 8-bit transparency instead of the earlier 1-bit transparency.
- ffmpeg – a complete solution to record, convert and stream audio and video. I use it for command-line video conversion via Zinc’s exec-adv command.
- acmenc – an audio encoding tool for ACM (ACM Audio Compression Manager) codecs with command-line interface. If you are creating an application that encodes or decodes MP3, you need to play license fees to the Fraunhofer Institute. The ACM allows you to use Windows Media Player to encode MP3, thereby avoiding the requirement to pay royalties for using the MP3 format.
I encourage you to download the latest picklish, and let me know what you think. I also highly recommend MDM Zinc – you can get version 1.0 for free. In fact, everything in the list above is free, so there’s no reason why you can’t get started building desktop apps for Flash right away. It’ll be good practice for when Apollo comes out.

By the way, if anyone knows of an equivalent of the ACM in OS X, I’d be interested. I’m on the lookout for cool command-line utilities to pair with Zinc. Anyone know of an open-source (LGPLed) command-line audio recording app?
