Treemap PHP Source Code

Filed under: PHP — geoff @ 11:29 pm

I have packaged a simple version of my treemap algorithm, along with example usage, CSS, and images for those who are interested. I really had a lot of fun with this. I used in on an aggregator site called roomformilk, and elsewhere. I’m also using it as a backend admin tool on a site of mine to see what users are using how much bandwidth.

You can download the package here. (ZIP file)

I’m still experimenting with it. I took the roomformilk code, and juryrigged it to take in my GMail RSS feed for which I am subscribed to FlashCoders. It’s pretty cool to get a searchable index of Flash-related questions and answers with a treemap navigation interface.

FlashDevelop 2.0, First Impressions

Filed under: Flash — geoff @ 2:59 pm

It always takes me a while to wrangle up enough energy to try out a new IDE. There’s a lot of inertia there… I build up habits, and muscle memory as it were, as I get used to a certain way of doing things. So, following the recommendations of my respected colleagues, I decided to give FlashDevelop a spin.

At first, I was a little confused as to the best way to bring my existing project in. It has a Wizard, but, as I’m not as up to speed on the proper Actionscript 2.0 way to set up projects as most, so I wasn’t quite sure which template to choose. I chose ‘Empty Project’, and then chose the directory of my existing project.

I Love SciTE:ASCS for Actionscript 2.0!

Filed under: General — geoff @ 5:14 pm

I’ve finally decided to buckle down and start coding everything in AS 2.0 classes. I’d always used SciTE:Flash, and I upgraded to SciTE:ASCS because of its Actionscript 2.0 support. I must say, it’s wonderful. Once you get going with building out your classes, it really saves your arms from pain and your brain from strain as it has great code completion for both built-in commands and your own custom methods. It even reads referenced and imported classes in packages and completes code for those.

Safari, PHP, and File Uploads

Filed under: PHP — geoff @ 10:29 am

Okay, so I’ve searched the web high and low and have been unable to find a solution for found a solution for this problem. (There may be a solution at “experts exchange”, but I refuse to pay to see their “solution”.) I’ve got an image upload form on my site… a typical web form. It works fine in all browsers except Safari. In Safari, the upload quits immediately, and the form handler says nothing was submitted.

I think this is a problem with the way Safari submits multipart form data. PHP can’t handle it and pukes. I see a lot of posts out there about this… people are complaining that this doesn’t work, however I see nothing on Apple’s site, nor any actual solutions posted.

World Map RSS Screensaver

Filed under: General — geoff @ 9:49 am

I’ve created a screensaver out of the world map RSS reader I have on reverbiage. I made significant design changes due to the fact that it’s a screensaver. I’m using a darker palette (to save the screen), and made it interactive so that you can click on stories in the feed. Get it here.

It works pretty well, although the animation is a bit jumpy at full-screen. It’s windows-only for now. Anyone know of a good (cheap!) Flash screensaver creator for Mac OS X?
